Who's who in 'House of the Dragon': The Targaryen family tree

house of the dragon family tree

And it will show how Daenerys’ ancestors tore the family apart and caused dragons to go extinct. You’d be hard pressed to find a more complex family tree in the Seven Kingdoms than that of the Targaryens, who often practiced incest and had many children to shore up their dynasty. With the latest episode, “The Princess and the Queen,” the show skips forward in time 10 years to introduce us to a whole new generation of the family. As the grandson of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, Viserys was selected as one of the multiple claimants to the throne when Jaehaerys's sons died, leaving his grandchildren as claimants.

Daenerys shares the name of one of King Jaehaerys's daughters, while her brother Viserys was named after King Viserys I and King Viserys II. Eve Best plays Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, the daughter of the late Prince Aemon Targaryen, the eldest son of King Jaehaerys. Following the death of King Viserys and the crowning of King Aegon II Targaryen, Daemon crowns his wife Rhaenyra as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and advocates war with the Greens. Due to King Viserys's lack of male children, Prince Daemon occupies the position as the heir to the Iron Throne, despite being considered the 'Rogue Prince'.

Daemon

After him, Aegon's son by Visenya, King Maegor Targaryen (aka Maegor the Cruel) became a tyrannical ruler after Aenys' death and even killed Aenys' eldest son, Aegon. As we've previously seen, loyal people have a rough time in the Seven Kingdoms, and Otto's main opponent in the series is likely to be Daemon. Daemon is not only a threat to Rhaenyra, he's also a threat to his own brother and Otto will do anything to protect Viserys.

Queen Alicent Hightower

But the two sons she bears with Daemon, Viserys II and Aegon III, ultimately do both become rulers of Westeros, so perhaps in the end, she wins. The series adapts portions of George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, a collection of stories accompanying the Song of Ice and Fire series upon which the Game of Thrones universe is based. The book is a partial history of the Targaryens, with whom fans will be well-acquainted, since their reign stretches from Daenerys all the way back to the first king of Westeros. Viserys marries his cousin Aemma (Sian Brooke), who gives birth to Rhaenyra Targaryen. In the first episode of House of the Dragon, Aemma dies in childbirth after Viserys cruelly forces her to have a C-section against her consent.

Aegon II Targaryen (Ty Tennant, then Tom Glynn-Carney) arrives just in time to send the kingdom into further chaos as lords question why the Iron Throne would pass to Rhaenyra when the king finally has a son. As a teenager, though, Aegon seems to care little about who inherits the throne. Only when his mother Alicent points out that Rhaenyra will likely kill Aegon and his siblings to secure her place on the Iron Throne does the young boy seem to become invested in questions of succession.

Her uncle and the younger brother to King Viserys, Daemon, is the presumed heir. But Rhaenyra is a dragonrider and this is a world where dragons have definitely not gone extinct. Daemon's marriage to Rhea Royce ends soon after his second banishment from the Red Keep, with the lady officially dying of a fall from her horse. (It's heavily implied that Daemon kills her.) His second wife is Laena Velaryon, with whom he has twin girls, Baela and Rhaena. By the end of Episode 6, he's a single father after Laena dies by dragonfire while giving birth to a stillborn child. Laena’s father Corlys Velaryon initially tries to marry her to Viserys as a power play.

Laena Velaryon

After Rhaenyra and Daemon marry, they welcome two sons, whom they name after Aegon the Conqueror and Rhaenyra's father (and Daemon's brother) Viserys. Rhaenyra's second-born child is more mild-mannered than his brother, and has a tougher time with his fate as a royal. In Episode 8, he's named heir to the seat of House Velaryon, Driftmark, but he later admits to his mother that he doesn't want it, and even gets "greensick" (Westerosi for seasick). He is also fiercely loyal to his mom and honorable, which spells trouble when his uncle Aemond comes after him for revenge after losing an eye. Things went downhill for Daemon by the end of the premiere, with Viserys taking away his title as heir and giving it to Princess Rhaenyra. After a failed bit of rebellion and a successful war against Craghas "The Crabfeeder" Drahar, Daemon returns to the Red Keep in victory, where he proceeds to make a pass at Rhaenyra with the aim of making his niece his second wife.

List of Targaryen monarchs in Westeros

If you can’t get enough of the Targaryens, check out our articles on the mighty Game of Thrones dragons, Caraxes, Seasmoke, Syrax, and Meleys. We’ve also got articles on a number of major players in the Dance of the Dragon, including Alicent Hightower, Otto Hightower, Larys Strong, and Ser Criston Cole. Twyin’s departure from court caused chaos as Aerys turned his paranoia toward his son Rhaegar. Ultimately, though, the King’s undoing would be caused by his son, just not in the way Aerys expected. In 282 AC, Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna Stark, enraging the Wardens of the North.

With his dying breath, he legitimized his bastard children, creating the Blackfyre family in the process and sewing the seeds for future rebellions. She's a Targaryen by both blood and marriage – despite being born House Arryn, her mother, Daella, was a Targaryen and a daughter of King Jaehaerys. They have three children together, although their daughter Visenya Targaryen is stillborn. That pretty much covers the major pieces on the chess board at the beginning of the series, without getting too far into what’s ahead. For an idea of just how much history exists between this series and the original, note that Jaehaerys is the fourth Targaryen king to rule the Seven Kingdoms.

Criston, however, ultimately becomes her enemy after he allies with Aegon and convinces him to go for the crown. The greens and the blacks aren’t just about who’s more popular; the greens also represent the widespread belief that a woman shouldn’t be able to inherit the crown. Support for Rhaenyra, a.k.a. identifying as one of the blacks, is a sign of support for women’s equality. Daenys Targaryen, who came to be known as Daenys the Dreamer, had a vision that the city of Valyria—where all the dragonriders once resided—would be consumed in some apocalyptic event. Her father, Aenar, took this vision to heart and moved his entire family out of Valyria to Dragonstone.

Just to make sure everyone’s caught up on all the new Targaryens, Velaryons, and other strong (ahem) contenders for our attention, here’s what the family tree looks like as of Episode 6 of House of the Dragon. Rhaenys is the firstborn child of Aemon Targaryen and eldest granddaughter of Jaehaerys and Alysanne. She’s married to Corlys “The Sea Snake” Velaryon in a love match that consolidates a ton of the realm’s wealth and power into one badass mega-family. Soon after, Rhaegar and Lyanna ran away together to be secretly married, though the Starks and Baratheons framed it as an abduction rather than a mutual elopement, officially kicking off the war. Robert ultimately killed Rhaegar at the Battle of the Trident, and Elia and her two children with Rhaegar were killed, too. Lyanna died early, too, due to complications after giving birth to her and Rhaegar’s only child.

Alicent was raised in the Red Keep, and she has an incredible political mind. That's always been something people close to the Iron Throne need to survive. She's also not in either Daemon or Rhaenyra's corner when it comes to who she thinks should take the throne next (even though she and Rhaenyra grew up as childhood best friends). Jacaerys is the firstborn son of Princess Rhaenyra and her first husband Laenor Velaryon and therefore follows her in line for the throne.

A Great Council was called and the lords of Westeros cast their vote, favouring the male choice of Viserys over Rhaenys or her own son, Ser Laenor Velaryon. After this, King Aegon spent the remainder of his reign consolidating his rule and preparing his son Prince Aenys Targaryen to rule alongside his wife, Lady Alyssa Velaryon. However, he was not the first monarch over multiple kingdoms of Westeros and nor the earliest Targaryen ruler to be mentioned in the series. The House of the Dragon features numerous notable figures from House Targaryen and begins years prior to the events of the main series during the reign of the Old King himself, King Jaehaerys. But in the meantime, why not recap on who’s who in House of the Dragon and how Rhaenyra, her father King Viserys and others are related to their Game of Thrones descendent Daenerys. We know we'll have a second season to look forward to, but as for the state of the Targaryen family before we get there, that's anyone's guess.
